THE ORDINARY. CAFFEINE SOLUTION 5% + EGCG
This takes the cake for the best $7 I have ever spent. It's highway robbery, quite frankly. Just call me Kissin' Kate Barlow* I guess! But first, I want to have a conversation about The Ordinary. because Lord know a whole bunch of you lovely folks have inquired... and rightfully so!
I really like what The Ordinary. (but most importantly Deciem) is doing as a new brand in a landscape that has had hundreds of years to mutate and morph into a hellish shooting ring where the little guys are picked off by the dozen. The beauty and personal care industries, of which Deciem cleverly has presence in both, is dominated by a few gigantic corporations - but you don't need me to tell you that. The Megalodons of profit margin obscenity have all worked through brand acquisition to become the only product options many people in the United States have available to them based on brick-and-mortar retail or ya know, if you just don't like shopping online. The companies want to be the drugstore, not just sit on its shelf. This hyper-saturation means that gaining traction as a small and/or independently owned beauty brand can be tricky - but again, you don't need me to tell you that.
Deciem is (eloquently) saying fuck you, let's change things. They make, in my opinion, good products that push boundaries and ignore the industry standards and practices that are set forth by the titanic companies that own them. Having your own lab certainly helps too, but that's just me being nosy! I certainly respect their gusto and sense of humor and that should never go unnoticed, especially when Lauder's knockin' on your door. Good for Deciem! Funding helps innovation and fulfilling orders so I'm all for it and to me, it seems like Brandon Truaxe knows what he's doing.
The Ordinary., from concept to reception, is one of their biggest game changers. Here's a snippet from the website:
The Ordinary is an evolving collection of treatments offering familiar, effective clinical technologies positioned to raise pricing and communication integrity in skincare. The brand was created to celebrate integrity in its most humble and true form. Its offering is pioneering, not in the familiar technologies it uses, but in its honesty and integrity. The Ordinary is born to disallow commodity to be disguised as ingenuity. The Ordinary is "Clinical formulations with integrity".
By taking away the obscene - and I mean truly obscene - profit margins and funneling everything into the formula quality, you get skincare that checks off the most important box of all: it works. Well, sometimes. For some people.
I think it's great that The Ordinary. has so many options of high quality for such an accessible price, but I also think one must approach the metaphorical sales floor with an existing knowledge of skincare to truly be able to shop with the most thrift. I've been at this for a few years and I'm confident in my knowledge of skincare, but damn - four different kinds of Vitamin C? Five? Six?
As a result, the entire shopping process can be quite frustrating if you don't have references at the ready because it may be difficult to find a starting place. My recommendation is to step back and first determine what your skin needs and what you don't already have.
I'd be ignorant to say that everyone loves The Ordinary. because they don't. Some of you may feel neutral - that's about where I sit. There have been a couple of products that I liked, and in the case of this review, one that I love. I'm certainly interested to see what they will do as time progresses and will undoubtedly continue to purchase the products, but I won't be waiting at the door with my tail wagging every time I can hear them on the other side. I'm not ready to pounce every time something is launched. That's simply my own personal relationship with the products, and I think it's important for everyone to shape their own opinion as well.
I haven't spoken much about my thoughts or feelings on The Ordinary. in the past because I feel that others have already said exactly what I wanted to say and have said it better than I ever could. Case in point: Caroline's mention. Don't forget Stephanie's great series. And of course, Renee's collection.
I have never used an eye product that produces such dramatic results literally on contact. For me, the nicest thing about this product is its reliability. I reach for it because it works every single time, in some capacity. However, the worse-off my eyes are the day of / night before, the more impactful the results. I mean, I ain't mad about that.
On my eyes, dark circling (you know, the look of tiredness and/or the presence of adult beverages in my system from the night before) is literally wiped away as this serum is smoothed into the skin. By the way, the darkness I'm speaking about is onset by poor lifestyle choices, of which I have many. This will not correct hereditary discoloration because no product can. If you are truly concerned about darkness that has always existed for as long as you can remember, I would speak with a dermatologist about your options for treatment or corrective surgery. That is, if it bothers you. If you are Sky Ferreira and/or love the neo-heroin chic look like I do, then work it hunty!
The first time I used it changed my opinion of The Ordinary., broadened my vision of how impactful an eye product could be, and made me realize that I'm never gonna stop buying this. Ever. To me, that speaks volumes. Just remember that you're only reading an individual review and should do more research and read customer testimonials before purchasing. I don't care if it's $7 or $170 - I'm gonna do some digging gurl.
I've tried to capture the difference it makes in photos but I usually look too rough for the Internet to hang onto for eternity, so this impactful event has never been caught on camera. Rest assured though, the shit works and it works every time. Just like the Bend and Snap! 😏
It's a thin serum with a mild viscosity that absorbs quickly, feels gently hydrating, and has no noticeably scent. It dries to form a slightly taut finish, but I tend to layer eye cream over it so that effect is minimized. It does take care of the slight bit of puffiness I get, but my concerns are much more focused on dark circling.
*Pause - and cheers! for a poor lifestyle choice glass of wine or three*
The only way I know how to properly review this product is the following:
The shit works. It works every time. I would recommend it to my best friends (and I have). It works when I look like shit the next morning. It works if I look a little jacked up and I have to come in contact with another human being in the near future and I don't want them to think I do meth. It would be great for guys who may prefer more minimal styling and less scent / "experience" in their products, but are concerned about under-eye circling that isn't hereditary. It balls up if you let it dry down too much so pop an eye cream on top of it and you'll be fine. Don't over-do it. Make sure the cap of the dropper is screwed on tight otherwise it won't be air-tight. It's the best $7 I've ever spent and yes I am counting that time I bought the Charlie's Angel's: Full Throttle Soundtrack at Sam Goody when I was eleven okay?

This light-textured formula contains an extremely high 5% concentration of caffeine, supplemented with highly-purified Epigallocatechin Gallatyl Glucoside (EGCG) from green tea leaves.
