There's a lot to like about Jo Malone London as a brand. I appreciate their approach to simplicity. The bottles sit softly against the flamboyant designs of designer fragrance bottles alike. The experience of using one of their colognes is elegant and almost entirely focused on the scent. And so British!
Blackberry & Bay is easily the most beautiful thing I have smelled in my entire life. With every spritz, my knees get weak, soul opens up, and joy floods my entire existence. At the very onset of application, there's a subtle Windex vibe but you have to look for it. It doesn't phase me though because I'm there. I'm eating blackberries off the bush during a chilly sunrise. I've never done that, but I'm still there in the blackberry patch. It's tangy and tart - you can almost feel the sensation of flattened seeds between your teeth.
It's cool and leafy - like the cool autumn air surrounding rows of bay trees with mint planted in between. Have I ever been there either? Nope, but rest assured that I'm running barefoot through the trees with the cold morning dew in between my toes. The temperature doesn't reach menthol frigidness, by the way. It stays sweet and refreshing.
It's the kind of scent that I want to smell every single day of my life. I want to feel it on my skin in my linens and notice on my wrist around lunchtime. The latter will require touching up, by the way. It's a cologne. It's fleeting, and its tendency to drift away only makes me crave it more. When I catch it on the collar of my t-shirt at the end of the day, the stained-juice tang of blackberry is usually all that remains and my mouth starts to water all over again.
It evokes memories that I've never had. It's a fantasy that's so embedded in reality. My mind searches for memories of blackberry picking and bushels of fresh bay leaves, but its response to lack of data is a sense of bliss that can only be described as butterflies in your soul - and that's qualification for a fantastic fragrance if you ask me.
Next is picking up the body cream and the reed diffuser and, you know, going to pick blackberries and bay leaves this autumn. Speaking of, B&B looks great with beige head to toe, just so ya know:
